Self Reliance.

When I think back to how COVID-19 impacted my life - I recall the various tough lockdowns that I experienced here in Victoria Australia; my various extended family members that lost their job; the years later of economic consequences with increased living costs and losing my job in 2022 and having no partner to financially provide for me.

Despite it seeming bleak in this world that we live in right now, I am still grateful for all the blessings that are bestowed upon me.

I lost my job once before about a decade ago and was unemployed for 3 years it was scary to loose the thing in life that made me feel secure (A JOB). However, I had to learn to trust that I would be better off in the long run for the having experienced this trial.

I was fortunate at the time when I was unemployed the 1st time to be given the opportunity to facilitate various 12 week Self Reliance classes which as I was teaching others about also taught me the importance of being prepared and how I can navigate through trials in the best way possible.

I now love Self Reliance and encourage everyone to invest their time in understanding what that really means for them.

For those unemployed now your priorities are:

1) Register with Centrelink ASAP.

2) Contact your Bank to get a Freeze on your Home Loan Payments or ask your landlord for a reduction in rent.

3) Find out if you can access some of your super.

4) Then start looking for a job.

When you are unemployed your full time job is looking for and applying for jobs.

For those needing Urgent Help Finding a job I suggest contacting a "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" Ward Self Reliance Specialist to get 1 on 1 assistance with your CV, Cover Letter and LinkedIn Profile.

I would also suggest asking an LDS Ward Specialist about completing a self-reliance course such as:

  • Find a Better Job,

  • Starting and Growing a Business,

  • Personal Finances.

  • Eating Healthy and Being Active

  • Emotional Resilience

  • Life Skills

I have facilitated these courses for many years and know that these courses are available to the public free of charge and their is no committment required to join the church.

This opportunity has the potential to help you now and in the future.

We are never given a burden greater than what we can bear.

I am a firm believer that the toughest soldiers experience the most and deepest trials - so it is a testimony as to how special you are.

For those who are fortunate to be able to help family members that are unemployed the solution is not to give you family members money outright as that is not teaching them Self Reliance, but you can help by doing things such as the below:

  • Buying them food,

  • Buying them a computer to apply for jobs,

  • Buying them clothes or shoes,

  • Buying them luxury items such as beauty treatments that they can do at home like face masks, hair masks, feet masks etc.

Please have them in your thoughts and think of those people less fortunate than you.

I have a constant reminder when I think of one of my relatives (a little child less than 3 years old) that was so poor that she slept on a concrete floor as her family had no mattress and used a water bottle for a pillow. It breaks my heart to think of this little child and what she endured.

If you are home and not able to work, please use your time wisely and make the effort to learn about personal finances; finding a job; starting a business; eating healthy and being active; emotional resilence or life skills - becuase you never know when those skills will come in handy to bless someone in your family or someone in your circle of friends.
